George III Mahogany Secretaire-Bookcase Cabinet
Circa 1765
Of breakfront form, in two parts, the upper section with dentil-molded central pediment and blind fret-carved frieze, with three mullioned glazed doors opening to adjustable shelves above a projecting lower section fitted with a astragal-molded secretaire drawer opening to a polished writing surface, valence drawers, pigeonholes and pilaster-fronted document drawers, all over two molded cupboard doors opening to a sliding shelf, raised on bracket feet; backboards of both sections with partial paper labels and inked inscriptions The Revd. Dr. Harrison./17 Overton Street/Edge Hill/Liverpool and the printed name B. W. Allen, Printer, Wakefield. Height 7 feet 10 inches (238.8 cm), width 50 inches (127 cm), depth 21 inches (53.3 cm).

There are design features of the present secretaire-cabinet taken from Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director. Intriguingly, althought the printed label with a Wakefield address is 19th century, the quality of the present lot suggests a maker of some repute, possibly the local firm of 18th century cabinet-makers of Wright and Elwick, subscribers to the Director.
