George III Inlaid Mahogany, Satinwood and Tulipwood Chest of Drawers
Last quarter 18th century
The oval-inlaid quarter-veneered rectangular top above four graduated drawers with brass handles flanked by canted stiles with yewwod-inlaid oval panels, the shaped apron raised on splayed legs. Height 49 3/4 inches (126.4 cm), width 39 inches (99.1 cm), depth 20 inches (50.8 cm).
The curious mask on the backplate of the handle is possibly that of the Egyptian dwarf-god Bes, a deity who symbolized protection.
