VAILLANT, [FRANCOIS] Travels from the Cape of Good-Hope, into the Interior Parts of Africa...
London: William Lane, 1790. First English edition. Two volumes. Full contemporary calf, in slipcases. 8 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches; [xxv], 442; [ii], 464 pp.; frontispieces, plates (including 2 folding). Joints weak, generally a bit rubbed with some leather loss, some foxing and offsetting, bookplate in volume two.
"The frontispiece in volume 1 'Dangerous Attack of a Tyger' is an extra plate and is only found in the Lane edition. It does not replace the Hottentot woman as stated by Mendelssohn's Bibliography volume 1 page 890" (A South African Bibliography III (1979), p. 102). With an armorial bookplate with the motto "Deo Ducente," likely of Sir Robert Palk (1717-1798) [see: Rhodes, "Some Italian Eighteenth-Century Books Acquired by British Travellers in Italy"].
