Los Angeles, California: Haynes Corporation, 1944. First edition, signed by the author. Publisher's blue cloth. 9 x 5 7/8 inches; xxix, 293 pp.; plates after photographs, half-title. Extremities a bit worn, endpapers toned, bookplate to front pastedown, booksellers ticket to rear pastedown.
Bookplate with elephant and lion vignette, with handwritten: "Limited Private Edition / #571 - Society of Members of 1893 Columns / March 1946". Inscribed "Yours sincerely / F. R. Burnham" to front free endpaper. "The first half of this scarce volume relates Burnham's adventures in East Africa and Matabeleland which are also noted in his more famous book Scouting on Two Continents. In Taking Chances, he devotes one chapter to describing his hunt for elephant in the forest country near Mt. Koenigskopf in Kenya, while in another he details a lion hunt" (Czech).
