BURNHAM, FREDERICK RUSSELL Scouting on Two Continents.

Very warmly inscribed by the author to his friend John Hays Hammond, mining engineer, diplomat, and philanthropist who was given complete charge of Cecil Rhodes's mines in South Africa, with smashing success. It reads: "To my friend of many years, / John Hays Hammond, / Whose life & council have always / been to me a guiding star. / Some of these tales, you have / heard when we sat yarning on / the shores of the Pacific, long ago. / If they have the right to live on / the printed page, they owe much / to your inspiration. / I hope some breath of the / 'High Veldt' may always rise from / them like an incense in the / temple of our friendship / Yours sincerely / [signed] F. R. Burnham".
