KIPLING, RUDYARD The City of Dreadful Night and Other Places.
Allahabad: A.H. Wheeler, 1891. First published edition (a slightly expanded version of the suppressed edition of 1890, of which only three copies survive). Efforts were made to suppress this edition also, per Livingston 70. Original light greenish grey pictorial wrappers, preserved in a half red morocco slipcase and and chemise. 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (14 x 22 cm); [4] ff., 108 pp., [5 ff.]. Very light wear to extremities of wrappers; the songwriter Jerome Kern's copy, with his bookplate on the chemise, and the name of G.F. Nicholson neatly written at the head of the title; together with the first English edition of the same title. London: Sampson Low [etc.], [1891]. Publisher's wrappers. Front cover separating, tear at head of wrapper. Slipcased; and THOMSON, JAMES. The City of Dreadful Night and other poems. London: Reeves and Turner, 1890. Second edition, inscribed "Ambrose Poynter from his Cousin Rudyard Kipling Aug: 7: 90:" Publisher's dark green cloth. Spine a little dull.
The earliest obtainable edition of Kipling's City, here offered with a very interesting Kipling family copy of Thomson's poem, which influenced the titling of Kipling's Night. This is acknowledged in the notice at the front of the first English edition. Richards A52; Livingston 70. (2)
