KIPLING, RUDYARD Ballads and Barrack-Room Ballads by...
New York and London: Macmillan, 1892. First American edition, this copy with a very fine Kipling autograph letter signed tipped to first blank, letter dated Brattleboro, Vermont Jan. 20 1893, 27 lines addressed to a Mrs. Rollins (possibly Alice Wellington Rollins?). Publisher's blue cloth gilt, housed in a morocco backed slipcase and chemise. 7 1/4 x 5 inches (18 x 12.5 cm); [9] ff., 208 pp., [5] ff. Spine a bit dulled, slight soiling to covers, in all a pleasing copy.
The fine letter, which mentions an enclosure (not present), discusses a piece called "The Man Who Was Not," this presumably being the item enclosed. Kipling provides an interesting anecdote of a man in India whose behavior related to the story, and notes a similarity in the title to one of his own stories (presumably "The Man Who Was"). The letter includes with an account of his plans to travel to New York, some quite chatty observations on a recent trip there to see Mrs. Dodge (i.e. Mary Mapes Dodge), etc. Steward 109; Livingston 91.
