STUKELEY, WILLIAM Of the spleen, its description & history, uses and deseases, particularly the vapors with their remedy ... To which is added, Some Anatomical Observations in the Dissection of an Elephant.
London, for the author, 1723. First edition, contemporary boards rebacked and recornered. 12 3/4 x 8 inches (32.5 x 20.5 cm); frontspiece portrait of Hippocrates, [xii], 108 pp., with eight plates on the spleen including two superb plates printed in color monochrome by Elisha Kirkall after Stukeley, and eight plates (some folding) of the dissection of the elephant by Stukeley, these quite foxed. Some staining to the lower margin of the text in the first half of the work, outer margin of D2 cut away with partial loss of the page numerals, the first three leaves neatly remargined at the head.
Dedicated to Sir Hans Sloan, the first portion of the work was given in 1722 at the Royal College of Physicians. Stukeley is perhaps best known today as a pioneering archaeologist and for his history of Stonehenge. He was a member of the Royal Society and a friend of Newton.
