[HUNTING TROPHIES] CUMMING, ROUALEYN GEORGE GORDON. Catalogue of Hunting Trophies, Native Arms, and Costumes, from the far interior of South Africa.
[London]: [printed by G. Norman], 1850. First edition? Apparently disbound from a larger volume, in a cloth clamshell case. 7 7/8 x 5 inches (20 x 12.7 cm ). Trace of central fold.
The catalogue of Gordon-Cumming's remarkable collection, accumulated during his sojourn in South Africa, as recounted in his book Five years of a hunter's life in the far interior of South Africa. Gordon-Cumming (unhyphenated in the present work) was a prodigious (even indiscriminate) hunter, and something of a thorn in David Livingstone's side. His collection, known as The South Africa Museum, was exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851, and it toured extensively around the British Isles (with, for example, a catalogue produced locally when it was shown in Edinburgh), but the present pamphlet appears to predate this tour, The collection includes a wide range of hunting trophies, as well as native artifacts and a "South African Waggon and Gear, the Home of the Hunter for about five years in the trackless Deserts and Forests of the far interior."
