Two volumes, original publisher's brick red cloth gilt (the second-issue binding). 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (22 x 14 cm); xvi, [2], 412; vi, [2], 408 pp.; twelve chromoxylographic plates, one folding map hand-tinted in blue and green (at the end of the second volume). Spines darkened, some wear, slight speckling to cloth. Internally, a bit shaken, some leaves a little roughly opened, some foxing to plates, in all a good copy.
An important account of the region, and the first public airing (see the preface) of Burton's quarrel with Speke, with whom he had undertaken the journey.
