London: Chatto and Windus, 1884. First edition, later three-quarters dark green morocco by Bayntun, top edge gilt. First edition. 10 5/8 x 7 1/2 inches (27 x 19 cm); xxxx, 299 pp. Spine very slightly faded, in all a handsome copy.
A classic work on edged weapons by Burton, who was a very skilled swordsman. He published an earlier practical work on military exercised for infantry in 1876. Two more volumes of the present work were planned, but the book was a commercial failure. Penzer p. 107 et seq.
