[FRENCH & INDIAN WAR] POTE, WILLIAM. The Journal of Captain William Pote, Jr. during his captivity in the French and Indian War from May, 1745, to August 1747.
New York: Dodd, Mead, 1896. First edition, number 10 of 350 copies printed at the De Vinne Press, this copy belonging to contributor Victor H. Paltsits who wrote the Historical Introduction and has added marginalia and supplementary research materials in an envelope affixed to the rear board (see note). Two volumes. Original straight grained morocco backed boards. 9 x 6 1/4 inches; the text volume with folding map and 7 plates, 223 pp. The second volume housing the large folding color printed copy of Charles Morris' 1749 manuscript map of the North American colonies, opening to 23 1/3 x 33 inches. Crease to edge of folding map in text volume and with notes and inserts as mentioned, the Morris map with a split along a central fold and with a few collection stamps to verso, the bindings rubbed and nicked.
"Dr. Victor Hugo Paltsits (1867-1952) was an archivist, librarian, and New York State Historian who served as Keeper of Manuscripts for the New York Public Library from 1914 to 1941" (NYPL). This is his set of this interesting reprinting of Captain Pote's captivity journal which contains a few additional portraits, tipped-in notes, and an envelope of related material. Paltsits has signed each volume in 1896 and has added a further inscription to the front blank in 1945 in which he claims he labored three years on the book, wrote the forward attributed to Bishop Hurst, and was paid nothing except this copy!
