GARDNER, ALEXANDER (1821-1882) [Meeting of the Shenandoah and Potomac at Harpers Ferry],
circa 1865. Albumen print on modern mount, image 7 3/8 x 8 5/8 inches (186 x 218 mm), with a slip of paper archivally affixed to the mount bearing the signatures of John Brown ("your friend/John Brown"). Strong tones, but with a number of short tears to the bottom inch of the image. The attached Brown signature is rather pale, but apparently authentic; it matches other examples we have seen, with Brown's "Z" shaped Y in "Your." Framed.
Gardner's image shows what was left of the armory at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia in 1865, after the destruction by Union forces, to prevent if from falling to the Confederacy. The presentation is augmented with a signature of the great abolitionist, whose raid on the Armory and subsequent execution was one of the triggers of the Civil War.
Property from an International Corporation.
