Russian Wood Bread and Salt Plate
Late 19th century
Circular, the center carved with a bundle of wheat and agricultural implements, the border carved with the Russian proverb: Be happy with whatever riches you have [Chem khata bogata tem i rada]. Diameter 12 1/2 inches (31.8 cm.).
A comparable plate carved with the same Russian proverb was presented to the author, Anton Chekhov. The plate is now in the collection of the Museum-Estate Melikhovo, the former house of Chekhov.
