Lot Details
Lot 18
[U.S. NAVY] A Complete List of the American Navy; showing the Name, number of Guns, Commanders names and station of each Vessel, with the names of all the Officers in service, for October, 1813; and Steel's List of the Navy of Great Britain for July, 1813.
Boston: Russell, Cutler, and Co., and Joshua Belcher, 1813. Publisher's printed gray wrappers. 6 1/8 x 3 5/8 inches (15.5 x 9 cm); 40, [37]-106 pp. (as published). Light wear with slight loss to the wrappers at the head and foot of the spine, in all an exemplary copy. Elaborate ownership inscriptions in fine penmanship of William Taylor Junior of Boston, dated November 10, 1813, on inside front cover and first blank.
A very scarce work, in original condition, pertaining to the state of the U.S. Navy during the War of 1812. Though other such lists exist for this period, some in broadside, this is among the most comprehensive. "It has a list of all the captures and losses of both navies; an obituary list of all the officers killed including Captain Lawrence of the Chesapeake; Pay and subsistence table; List of Navy-Yards, etc., with memoranda showing the movements of vessels"--from the cataloguing of the Henry F. De Puy copy, sold by Anderson Galleries, 1920, which appears to be the last copy sold at auction. The first owner of this little work, William Taylor Jr., is likely the midshipman of that name, who received his commission January 1, 1812 (see https://bluejacket.com/usn_1814_officers.htm). Sabin 15059; Smith II, 760.
C Property of a Massachusetts Gentleman
