MOUNTAINEERING] [ANONYMOUS]. The Peasants of Chamouni. Containing an Attempt to Reach the Summit of Mont Blanc, and a Delineation of the Scenery among the Alps.
London: Baldwin, Cradock, & Joy, 1823. First edition. Publisher's quarter roan, marbled sides. 5 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches (13.5 x 8 cm); iv, 164 pp., 12 pp. ads.; frontispiece engraving, vignette by Willis of mountain climbers on title. Binding somewhat worn but overall sound, the frontispiece and title with offsetting as usual.
A children's story with a mountaineering theme, this is a fictionalized account of the attempt by Joseph Hamel to ascend Mont Blanc in 1820, which led to the first recorded fatal accident connected with a mountaineering ascent (three guides died). The book is generally quite rare in commerce, and we trace only three copies at auction since 2000. Meckly 143
