Lot 246
[JUVENILE] ASPIN, J.[EHOSHOPHAT]. Cosmorama; a View of the Costumes and Peculiarities of All Nations.
London: J. Harris, [circa 1827]. First or early edition. 19th century full mottled tan calf by Wallis, all edges gilt. 6 7/8 x 4 1/8 inches (17 x 10.5 cm); viii, 404 pp., with 72 delightful hand-colored illustrations on 18 plates. Joints a little rubbed, a clean copy overall; Together with PEACOCK, LUCY. The Adventures of the Six Princesses of Babylon, in their travels to the Temple of Virtue. London: printed for the author, by T. Bensley. Stated second edition, signed by the author on p.139. Publisher's calf-backed marbled boards (rebacked), in slipcase. 9 1/2 x 7 inches (24 x 18 cm); xxiv, 139, [1] pp. Neatly rebacked.
The first, a delightful Harris imprint, and quite scarce. The second work, likely written when the author was herself still a child of seventeen, first appeared the previous year. Peacock was a prolific author of juveniles (this appears to have been her first work), and she seems to have been a publisher of such books at the Juvenile Library, from 1796-1810. Likely the signature of the author served here as a copyright device; both Sterne and Hoyle similarly signed authorized editions of their books for that reason.
