Milan? 1730s? 20th century three-quarter vellum, marbled boards. 8 3/4 x 6 1/2 inches (22 x17 cm); written Latin in a neat bookhand, likely Italian, in black and red; 127 ff. (Books I-III), 5 ff. blank, 37 ff. (Book IV); 5 ff. blank, 5 ff. appendix to book II; with 41 folding plates pertaining to conic sections at the rear, on full-page guards that enable them to be viewed clear of the text block. Binding a bit worn, head of front joint starting to separate, a few minor stains within, generally quite clean. 20th century Italian ownership stamp on the first leaf.
A detailed, extensive, but apparently unpublished manuscript on conic sections, with sections on the cone and cylinder (book I), the ellipse (book II), the hyperbola (book III), and the parabola (book IV). The geometry discussed is almost entirely classically derived. The work does not draw on Wallis or Newton; it is entirely non-algebraic, but it covers a wide range of geometric theory and proof. The Stampas were a Milanese family, and we find brief mention of Joseph Maria as a classical scholar, fl. 1730-1750s. The diagrams are exceptionally neat and attractive.
