MARIA THERESA, Empress of Austria and the Holy Roman Empire Patent of nobility [or Wappenbriefe] on vellum.
Full red velvet with broad silk ties. 13 5/8 x 10 inches (34.5 x 25.5 cm); 9 vellum ff. (including an initial and penultimate blank vellum leaf), with heraldic docketings on the rear endpaper; the document written in a fine cursive script on 14 pp., signed by Maria Theresa on the final text leaf verso, dated 29 December 1778; with the newly issued arms of the Polastri family on f. 6 recto, heightened in gilt, the whole rendered in gouache against a delicate landscape background, within a gilt border. The binding with minor wear and soiling, slight cockling to the vellum, in all in excellent condition.
We trace this most attractive grant of arms to the Roderick Terry Sale of 1935.
