Lot 97
[INCUNABULA] THOMAS AQUINAS, Saint. Catena aurea super quattuor evangelistas.
[Nuremberg: Anton Koberger, August 8, 1475]. Full blindstamped pigskin over boards, probably a South German binding of the period, applied lettering piece on upper cover, cornerpiece and clasps no longer present, the index leaves from a large incunable on paste-downs, binder's waste at the front including portions of two fine fifteenth century Hebrew mss. on vellum, with an interesting index leaf from another ms. (circa 14th century, on vellum) affixed; in a cloth clamshell case. 18 1/4 x 12 1/2 inches (47 x 31.5 cm); 201 ff. (of 434 ff.), the commentaries for Matthew and Mark only, likely once bound in two volumes because of bulk, the second of which is no longer present; handsomely rubricated throughout. The binding with some wear but still very handsome, lacking all furniture except for the upper portion of one clasp, a large full-margined copy, a few minor stains and some soiling to a few leaves, one leaf detached and others loosening, light edge wear and chipping to several leaves, overall quite clean and unpressed, but at least one leaf (f.47) missing and thus sold not fully collated, offered with all faults, not subject to return.
Although defective, a magnificent Anton Koberger printing, with some very interesting binder's waste at the front, comprising portions of a rather fine Hebrew manuscript in an extremely elegant hand. ISTC it00227000; GW online M40691; Hain 1331; Goff T227; etc.
