George III Mahogany Secretaire-Chest
Circa 1765
The rectangular top with thumbmolded edge and formerly fitted with shelves
above two simulated drawers hinged and enclosing a fitted interior with a velvet-lined writing surface and prospect doors above two long drawers, the bottom drawer with writing slide on a ratchet support, flanked by short and long drawers, the case fitted with four graduated drawers and raised on bracket feet. Height 48 1/2 inches (123.2 cm), width 43 1/4 inches (109.7 cm), depth 21 1/2 inches (54.6 cm).

Originally fitted with shelves, this secretaire-chest was designed for a bedroom, the shelves used for the display of porcelain. A similar example is illustrated, Macquoid and Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, vol. I, p. 152, fig. 60.

Lacking gallery and superstructure with nailholes and shadows where formerly situated, back corners with rectangular patches, top with rippling at center along lines of board construction under veneers, old marks and scratches, black rings to left front, later applied edge to top of secretaire drawer, appearing to retain original gilt-brass handles and escutcheons, top of secretaire drawer and along edge of top drawer below secretaire drawer with white perishing to varnish, age cracks along center of lower simulated drawer slightly above handles, two patches to top edgeof second working drawer repaired breaks to feet, left front foot later, old worm damage above back left foot, age cracks to sides.
