George III Mahogany Secretaire-Chest
Circa 1765
The rectangular top with thumbmolded edge and formerly fitted with shelves above two simulated drawers hinged and enclosing a fitted interior with a velvet-lined writing surface and prospect doors above two long drawers, the bottom drawer with writing slide on a ratchet support, flanked by short and long drawers, the case fitted with four graduated drawers and raised on bracket feet. Height 48 1/2 inches (123.2 cm), width 43 1/4 inches (109.7 cm), depth 21 1/2 inches (54.6 cm).
Originally fitted with shelves, this secretaire-chest was designed for a bedroom, the shelves used for the display of porcelain. A similar example is illustrated, Macquoid and Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, vol. I, p. 152, fig. 60.
