Lot 138
[ILLUSTRATION ART] TOMES, MARGOT. Original artwork for two of Tomes' published books.
Original artwork comprising significant portions of two of Tomes' 1972 published books Aaron and the Green Mountain Boys and The Secret of the Sachem's Tree. Mostly pen and ink drawings on illustration boards with glassine protectors, some with added color or color overlays, most with publishing instructions in the margins, the first work with text affixed, the boards mostly 15 x 10 inches. Comprising: for Aaron and the Green Mountain Boys present is about 30 boards including the cover artwork, the frontispiece, the balance offering two drawings per board paginated from 6-61 and with the text affixed, but the entire book is not present. For The Secret of the Sachem's Tree present is about 26 boards including artwork for the front and rear covers, the balance offering two drawings per board (a few blank) paginated from 2-48, this possibly the full book but no text is affixed. Offered with three additional works: a color drawing depicting Sherlock Holmes; a color landscape titled The Country of the Pointed Firs (Sarah Orne Jewett); and a color scene depicting two jousting knights. Some wear and stains, tape residue, not compared to the final published works and sold as is.

New York City born, Margot Tomes (1917-1991) was a cousin of painter Guy Pène du Bois and illustrator William Pène du Bois. Illustrator of over 60 books, Tomes specialized in children's literature after 1963, and her best-known works are Jack and the Wonder Beans, 1977, and If There Were Dreams to Sell, 1984. This group includes significant portions of two well-illustrated works from 1972, both indicative of Tomes' style as she frequently illustrated American historical tales, and here we have the Revolutionary era story of the Green Mountain Boys, and also classical fairy tales, here with the Halloween story The Secret of the Sachem's Tree.
