MELVILLE, HERMAN White Jacket; or the World in a Man-of-War.
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1850. First American edition, first printing per BAL. Publisher's brown cloth stamped in blind with the Harper's logo to the covers and gilt lettering to spine, yellow coated endpapers and three fly leaves at front and back (BAL's first binding). 7 3/8 x 5 inches; 465, 6 pp. ads at rear. The spine slightly soiled and with a chip near the upper gutter, the spine tips with small losses, foxing to fly leaves and first and last text pages, neat ink signature of George L. Fitch to a front blank, with the booklabel of William Safire.
An attractive copy of White Jacket, published the same year as the English edition. BAL's first printing points include: the Extract from Fuller's Good Sea-Captain precedes the Note which is dated New York, March 1850 on pages iii-iv; 6 pages of ads at rear; the mis-signed signature "Q*" appears on p. 361; and the signature mark T is not present on page 433.
