New York: Harper & Brothers, 1852. First edition. Modern cloth with paper spine label, retains three original blanks at front and back, the endpapers renewed, all edges red. 7 x 5 inches. viii, 495 pp. Lightly foxed throughout, with the booklabel of William Safire.
First edition of Melville's follow up to Moby Dick, uncommon as a large portion of the first edition of Pierre was destroyed in the 1853 fire at Harper & Brothers. BAL 13666.
