New York: Dix & Edwards, 1856. First edition. Publisher's cloth, lavender endpapers (one lacking). 7 1/16 x 4 1/2 inches; [iv] 431 pp., 7 pages ads at rear, the signature mark 14 present. A somewhat tired copy lacking the front free endpaper, a large offset to the title page which is toned, loss to spine tip, extremities rubbed, with the booklabel of William Safire.

Melville's only short story collection published in his lifetime including some his most enduring works such as Bartleby, the Scrivener, Benito Cereno, and The Enchantadas, the first offering the memorable phrase "I would prefer not to." BAL 13669.
