London: Constable & Co., 1924. First Edition of Billy Budd, one of 750 copies, being volume XIII only of The Works of Herman Melville, Standard Edition. Publisher's cloth, with remnants of original dust jacket (the panels present, much of the spine lost), the top edge gilt. 9 x 6 inches; viii, 399 pp., largely unopened. A fine copy with only minute fraying and toning to the spine tips, the jacket worn as noted, with the booklabel of William Safire.

This first edition of Billy Budd is infrequently encountered at auction separated from the larger set from which it was first published. The volume also includes the first book form printing of several other shorter Melville works. BAL 13882.
