Lot Details

Lot 186
[PEACOCK, THOMAS LOVE] Nightmare Abbey.
London: T. Hooker and Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1818. First edition. Original boards with printed paper spine label, housed in a morocco backed slipcase. 7 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches; [4], 218 pp., uncut. The spine and joints repaired but separating from the text block, some wear to boards, lightly foxed throughout, 1818 ink signatures of Francis Watt to the front pastedown and title, a slip laid in indicates this copy sold previously by Maurice Inman, Inc., this the Jean Hersholt copy with his bookplate and shelf marker to chemise.

Peacock, a friend of Percy Bysshe Shelley, wrote a number of novels that combined elements of fantasy and social commentary, and a character in Nightmare Abbey is said to be based on Shelley. This is an appealing copy in original boards, uncut and with wide margins. The first edition is rare at auction. This copy sold as part of the Library of Jean Hersholt, Parke-Bernet, 23 March 1954, lot 670.
