One of the few 18th-century accounts of the grand tour written by a woman. Hester Piozzi, or Hester Thrale, was an author, a diarist, a patron of the arts and a close friend to Samuel Johnson, about whom she "wrote the only contemporaneous account that gives a credibly different picture of what the great man was like" (Adam Gopnik, "Man of Fetters." The New Yorker, December 8, 2008).
