ELIOT, GEORGE Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life.
Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1871-72. First edition in book form. Four volumes. Publisher's gilt stamped blue cloth, cloth slipcase. 7 x 4 3/4 inches; 410; 377; 384; 371 pp., with all half-titles. A very attractive set overall with some minor restorations and light wear. The front hinge cracked in volume I and a small repair to the foot of spine, small abraded area on rear board; hinge repaired at front of volume III; volume IV with a small blemish to the edge of the verso of front free endpaper and half-title; all volumes with some light spotting to edges and first and last leaves, a few corners touched-up, each volume with the bookplate of Walter and Dorothy Donnelly.
A very fine set in original cloth of George Eliot's most enduring work, Middlemarch. The four volume first book edition was preceded by the very rare parts issue. This copy acquired from Paulette Rose Fine and Rare Books in 1997.
