Minton Renaissance Style Majolica 'Lindsay' Tray

Printed puce crown and ermine mark impressed cypher A, recorded as shape no. 1046, designed by Sir Coutts Lindsay, painted by Thomas Allen
The center painted with an oval panel of Venus and Neptune with six attendants, the cobalt-blue cavetto painted en grisaille with embracing tritons and nereids, the broad rim applied with four shells, two molded with tendrils trailing into the center, one molded with a putto seated between fish, and one molded with a blank heraldic shield, the pale blue reserved with starfish, edged by alternating pink and blue, tiny scallop shells. Diameter 18 inches.

Note:
Thomas Allen (British 1831-1915) painter. Sir Coutts Lindsay, a designer, painter and patron of the arts, opened the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877. He was in association with Minton circa 1860, a plateau designed by him was shown at the International Exhibition of 1862, London.
