[ASIA-HUNTING] "A Planter" [pseud., JENKINS, RICHARD WADE] Sport in Ceylon. Extracts from a Diary of Four Trips to the North-Central Province...
Colombo: Joseph Fonseka & Sons, 1888. First edition. Publisher's printed boards backed in pale red cloth. 8 1/4 x 5 1/8 inches (21 x 13 cm); ii, 119, [1] pp.; 8 lithographed plates. Covers somewhat worn and soiled, endpapers and terminal leaves foxed. Wilfrid Partington's copy, with his bookplate; bookplate of Benjamin Gooneratne.
A rare locally-published hunting work, with delightfully naive illustrations, this has appeared at auction only three times that we can trace. The identification of the author is from Czech, who writes "A tea planter, the author made four sporting trips into the North-Central province with hunts around tanks such as Minnery and Kantalawa. He relates adventures hunting elephant, bear, and buffalo in the region with note of deer species and small game as well..." Czech Asia p. 3.
C Estate of Arnold 'Jake' Johnson
