Lot 174
[INDIA-HUNTING] GILPIN, E.P., Captain and HEID, Captain. Three manuscript accounts of hunts in India, one (of a hunt in Kashmir and Baltistan and beyond) for ibex, markhor, bear etc.; the other two pig-sticking, and hunts for bison, bear and tiger.
Various locations: 1923-1927. Three volumes, three-quarters calf. 13 x 8 inches (33 x 30 cm); about 250 pp. in all (but most written recto only), in a mix of pencil and ink, the hand somewhat careless but quite legible; the first-mentioned manuscript with approximately 70 mounted photographs 2 1/2 x 4 inches, mostly of Himalayan landscapes, all labelled (with a few shots of game). With some associated letter and materials laid-in Quite worn, the front board of the first volume almost detached, a few pages loose, but apparently complete.
The hunt in Kashmir and Baltistan recounted in these pages took place on June 16 to August 6 (the year not known with certainty). Several markhor were shot in very difficult terrain among the foothills of the Karakoram Himalayas, in Baltistan. The journey ended with a return to Wular lake near Srinagar. Notes at the end of one work indicate that it was passed on to a friend; there is a list of the locales of various Northern Indian game animals, as well as (further on) a list of clothes taken on the expedition.
