A Rare Large Chinese Yaozhou Carved 'Crane' Celadon Bowl
11th-12th Century
The carved bowl rising from a short foot; the exterior sides with twelve carved concentric rings rising in a soft curve to the rounded everted rim; the interior of the bowl has a large carved round cavetto in which a crane in full flight is surrounded by simple floral swirls; surrounding the cavetto is a continuous swirling band of a floral design that stops at a carved circular line just below the rounded rim, the bowl covered inside and out with a glaze of slightly olive tone. Diameter 10 inches.

It is rare to find a Yaozhou bowl of this size; and even more rare to find one with a crane in full flight. Consider some of the representative sales of these Yaozhou examples: A Yaozhou bowl 6 3/4 inches (17 cm) with a duck in the cavetto and surrounded by florals was recently sold at Christies Hong Kong 29 November 2020, lot 3028 (Realized price HKD 400,000); An undecorated 9-inch (22.9 cm) Yaozhou dish was sold at Christies Hong Kong 3 October 2018 lot 225 (Realized Price HKD 175,000); a larger bowl 8 1/8 inches (20.6 cm) with hibiscus and leaf decoration was sold at Christies New York 21 March 2018, lot 501 (Realized price USD 372,500); and an 8 5/8 inch (21.9 cm) floral decorated bowl was sold at Christies New York 14 September 2011, lot 1467 (Realized price USD 68,500).
