WALLACE, LEW[IS] Ben-Hur. A Tale of the Christ.
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1880. First edition, first issue, with the date on the title page, the first issue dedication "To The Wife Of My Youth" in two lines and "be-became" on p. 11, lines 37-38. Original publisher's floral decorated cloth. 6 5/8 x 4 1/2 inches (17 x 11.5 cm); 552, 12 pp. (ads). Some rubbing and soiling to the cloth, especially to the spine, where there is a bit of fraying, the hinges sound, one signature a hair overopened, but in all a sound example. Early ownership inscription on front endpaper (dated 1883).

Moderately uncommon in this, the true first issue; the second issue of the book corrected the dedication to less ambiguous wording (his wife was still living). BAL 20798; Grolier American 82.
