Period sprinkled calf, edges yellow, marbled endpapers. 10 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches (27.5 x 21 cm); xvi, 420 pp.; four engraved maps (3 folding), 19 aquatint or stipple engraved plates by Fielding (some partially color-printed with hand heightening, two uncolored botanical plates folding), illustrations to text, errata slip mounted to the blank verso of the dedication page. Binding neatly restored retaining original spine, blank leaf adhered to the rear of the frontispiece, occasional minor foxing and offsetting, overall an attractive copy.
Abel, a naturalist, accompanied Lord Amherst's unsuccessful embassy to China, but the author was also in Sumatra (there is a fine account of the orang-outang Pongo abelii, with an excellent plate), Hong Kong, Manila etc. He had the misfortune to lose most of his specimens to shipwreck and pirates on the return voyage.
