Urquhart fought in the Greek War of Independence for on the nationalist side, and was wounded. He became around this time an increasingly strong admirer of the Turks, and the present work documents his increasing enthusiasm. Pp. 40-44 contain an amusing list of the differences between English and Turkish social and political customs. Among his many achievements, he introduced the Turkish bath to England.
