Lot Details

Lot 92
[GREECE] WICKENDEN, JOSEPH FREDERIC. Seven Days in Attica in the Summer of 1852.
London: Thomas Harrison, 1853. First edition, likely one of 67 copies only, as reported by Weber from the prospectus (and presumably privately published thus). Publisher's white wrappers printed in black, with loose plates (most on linen as issued), housed in the publisher's black cloth chemise and slipcase, the latter with pictorial label on the covers printed in terracotta. 10 3/8 x 7 1/4 inches (26 x 16.5 cm); xii, 35, [1] pp.; two maps, 23 lithographic views, 11 double page or panoramic (these mounted on linen, apparently as issued). Some wear and soiling to the case, the chemise separated at one fold, scattered minor foxing to the plates.

This work is more commonly met with in the 1857 trade edition. The text is keyed to the plates. The lithography of the covers is by Netherclift and Durlacher, and (though they are unsigned) we suspect that the attractive plates (largely views of the coast of Greece, printed upon a grey background) are also by them. The most extensive panorama is of eight conjoined panels, depicting the view from the summit of Mount Pentelicus, north of Athens. Blackmer 1792; Weber 1:1158.
