Lot 158
[JAMAICA] LYNCH, THOMAS, Governor. Autograph letter signed to the Earl of Sunderland.
Jamaica: 15 August 1683. A one page letter on a long bifolium of watermarked laid paper, signed "Tho Lynch." 14 x 9 inches (36 x 23 cm). Toned, short splits at folds, the ink dark and the text large.
Lynch, writing in his third and final term as Governor of Jamaica, here writes the Earl of Sutherland that "I have already at long wryt my Lord on discourse with Churchil & I have thought it my duty to trouble you with the enclosed and beseech you to deliver & mediate for my pardon..." Such 17th century documents from Jamaica are scarce. The letter is accompanied by a 1780 document, likely unrelated, regarding an estate on Jamaica; and an 1825 letter signed by William Montague, Earl of Manchester addressed to the Lords Commissioners of H.M. Treasury, King's House, Jamaica, 8 August 1825. The lot 3 items.
