First edition, one of 200 copies. 20th century cloth with red and black lettering labels. 7 1/8 x 4 inches (18.5 x 10.5 cm); 78 pp. Pencil signature and stamps to title, some foxing but otherwise a clean copy; Together with an 1856 edition of the Journal of the Constitutional Convention.
The verso of the title of this rare work reports only 200 copies printed. This volume contains the Constitution of Maine and the United States as well as the Acts of Separation from Massachusetts. The creation of Maine as a state was the result of the 1820 Missouri Compromise that sought to maintain a balance of slave holding to non-slave holding states, a controversial act in the decades before the Civil War.
