Lot 178
[MAINE] PERLEY, JEREMIAH. The Debates, Resolutions, and other Proceedings, of the Convention of Delegates, Assembled at Portlan...
. Portland: A. Shirley, 1820. First edition, with an inscription to title reading "Presented by Hon. Daniel Cony/March 1820", this and some corrections within possibly in the hand of John Quincy Adams (see note). Contemporary sheep with a red lettering label. 7 x 4 1/4 inches (18 x 11 cm); 300 pp., the errata leaf provided in facsimile. The binding rubbed and with joints starting, some spotting, one short tear into an early leaf, stamp to title.
An interesting association copy as this volume was formerly in the library of Lucius L. Hubbard and was included in his 1914 sale as lot 1742. At that time, the book was described as a presentation copy from Daniel Cony, president of the convention and the first Adjutant General of Maine, to former president John Adams and contained handwritten copies of Cony's letter to Adams and its reply (which is printed in this volume at p. 298). These letters are no longer present, but an examination of the inscription and corresponding errata corrections within the text indeed show resemblance the handwriting of then Secretary of State, John Quincy Adams, though this is unconfirmed. John Adams was divided on the creation of Maine as a state and urged them to remain part of Massachusetts. This volume contains the first printing of the Maine Constitution.
