Paris: Merlin, 1767. First French edition. Two volumes, contemporary mottled calf, gilt decorated spine, gilt lettered spine label, all edges marbled. 6 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches (16.5 x 9.5 cm). Volume I: [2], xviii, 384 pp.; Volume II: [2], x, 352; one folding map after Emanuel Bowen in each volume. Light rubbing and wear, corners a bit bumped, remnant of collections label pasted to foot of spine on volume I, pale staining and spotting to contents.

The first French edition of William Burke's history of European settlements in the Americas.
