[VERNACULAR--PHOTOGRAPHIC POSTCARDS] Album of approximately 250 photographic postcard nudes.
Paris: 1900-1920s. Mostly gelatin silver prints on photosensitized card, a few by other processes, some hand-colored. All approximately 3 1/4 x 5 3/8 inches (135 x 85 mm); some completed in ink on the verso. Light wear. Housed in an album.
A splendid collection of these erotic cards, famed in their time (as "naughty French postcards"), these the source and subject of a book by Martin Stevens French Postcards: An Album of Vintage Erotica. In fact, they are utterly charming and by modern standards endearingly innocent. As photographic art, they have considerable virtue. Sold with a group of photogravure French nudes of similar theme, a few framed.
Norma Stevens represented Richard Avedon for thirty years, and her husband Martin (d. 2016) was an art and creative director for Revlon and other agencies.
