Majolica Renaissance Style 'Palissy' Cherub Wine Ewer
Designed by Hugues Protât, shape no. 900, circa 1871
Of flattened barrel form with grapevine handle, the shoulder and neck applied with Bacchanalian putti, impressed uppercase mark, and cypher D, and with shape no. Height 14 1/2 inches.
Hugues Protât (born 1816, active 1835-1890), was a French sculptor employed in England in the early 1850's. At the Minton Memorial Institute, Stoke, he was appointed 'Modelling Instructor' at the School of Art, 1859-1863, but continued to work in a freelance capacity.
