[TRAVEL] LITHGOW, WILLIAM. Totall Discourse, of the Rare Adventures, and Painefull Peregrinations of Long Nineteene Yeares Travayles...
London: By Nicholas Okes, and are to be sold by Nicholas Fussell and Humphery Mosley at their shops in Pauls Church yard, at the Ball, and the white Lyon, 1632. First complete edition. Old brown armorial calf, crudely rebacked (the boards upside down). 7 1/8 x 5 inches (18 x 13 cm); [16], 507, [5] pp., A-3V^(4).; eight woodcuts in text, the missing frontispiece (a depiction of the author in Ottoman garb), is repeated on page 124. Misbound as noted, binding worn, internally lacking the frontispiece, restorations to some leaves at the beginning with losses just entering the text, the title page backed, numerous small tape repairs throughout, most to the gutter margins but a few touching the text, pale staining, most to the lower right corner.
By no means the loveliest of copies, but a readable (and likely restorable) copy of Lithgow's account of his wonderfully extensive peregrinations (over 30,000 miles, by his account) with the horrifying account of his detention by the Spanish. The 1614 first edition is likely unprocurable today and the present edition, which is the first complete account of his journeys, is by no means common. The book remained periodically in print until the 19th century. ESTC S108574.
