[LA FOLIE, LOUIS GUILLAUME DE] Le Philosophe sans pretention ou l'homme rare.
. Paris: Clousier, 1775. First edition. Full contemporary speckled calf. 7 3/4 inches (19 cm); frontispiece of a flying machine, 350 pp. Spine chipped, joints rubbed and the front joint starting to crack, corners worn through.
An early example of a science fiction novel, one of the first to feature an interplanetary vehicle operating on scientific (or rather pseudo-scientific) principles. This is used by an inhabitant of Mercury travelling to Earth, and is shown in the frontispiece. The machine is electrical in nature, and in description resembles the dynamo.
