Little is known about the landscape painter Hans Bergaigne, other than that he worked in the Netherlands in the early 17th century. His rare paintings clearly show the influence of such early 17th-century Flemish masters as Frederick van Valckenborch and Gillis van Coninxloo, and the Roman-inspired ruins in this piece suggest that he probably spent some time in Italy. His lively figures, however, have much in common with those of Dutch artists working in the 1620s such as Esias van de Velde and Jan van Goyen. This work is only the second painting by Bergaigne to appear at auction in recent years.
