Russian Silver Lined Malachite Cigar Box
First quarter of the 20th century
Of rectangular form, the hinged cover opening to reveal a lid decorated with a bas relief scene from the Odyssey when Odysseus returns to slay his wife's suitors while they feast at a banquet, inscribed in Cyrillic work of Count Feodor Tolstoy 1820. Height 4 inches, width 10 inches, depth 6 inches.

Additional Notes & Condition Report

The malachite veneer appears to be in generally good condition; there are some nicks and chips to corners and rim edges; the top center are of lid appears to have been restored; the bottom side of the box appears to be made of cast composition, which is malachite in color, and it has deep and shallow burst surface air bubbles; the silver is stamped 88 with the Kokoshnik mark from Moscow, circa 1908-26; interior lining has quite a bit of green staining and discoloration.
