. London: Robert Barker, printer to the Kings most Excellent Maiestie, 1606. The reissue, with a cancel title page, of A true and perfect relation of the proceedings at the severall arraignments of the late most barbarous traitors, London, 1606. This issue has the imprint in four lines, and line 5 of title page ending: "Iesuite,". Early calf, rebacked, all edges sprinkled. 7 1/8 x 5 inches (18 x 13 cm); [416] pp., ideally collating A^(4) (±A1) B-3F^(4) but lacking the 3F4, the blank. The old boards neatly rebacked, the title with an old name in ink (Hen. Huth), overall a fresh copy with the bookplate of William Sterling Maxwell and his neat pencil notes at rear.
According to Maxwell's notes, this copy was lot 2547 in the Bibliotheca Phillippica, sold Sotheby's June 24, 1974. An important work on the Gunpowder Plot. The Jesuit Henry Garnet was accused of being aware, in priestly role, of the Plot, from Robert Catesby, and of not having disclosed it to the authorities. Garnet, who was a voice of moderation, seems to have attempted to dissuade English Catholics from violent acts, and the public appears to have viewed his plight quite sympathetically. ESTC S125395.
