. Ashland, Kentucky: 1844-18. Sizes vary, largest 10 x 8 inches (26 x 21 cm). One letter with lower third detached but present, other splits along folds, a few spots, well preserved overall.
This correspondence between Clay and Mary Bayard, wife of fellow Whig Party Senator Richard Bayard, begins in 1844 with mention of the party's defeat in the recent presidential election (Clay's third such defeat as a presidential nominee). The subsequent letters comment on Mr. Bayard's re-election to the Senate in 1845, his disappointment at not receiving the presidential nomination in 1848, the changing nature of poltical parties, a description of a journey from Washington to Kentucky, and other personal affairs.
