[SHIP LOG] Log book (partial) of the Barque Mars for 1858-1863.
. Original cloth by Charles Taber & Co's Book Bindery, New Bedford (old label on front pastedown), neatly rebacked and cornered in leather. 13 1/4 x 8 inches (34 x 21 cm); approximately 200 ff. of blue ledger paper, neatly written in brown or blue inks, the verso of the first leaf with a list of whales raised, other whalers seen etc. The recto of the second leaf lists amounts of oil taken etc. in five entries, and the log proper begins on the third leaf with an entry for June 16th, 1858. The pale blue of the paper spotted or bleached white (by salt?), but the text is fully legible (with care) throughout.
The Barque Mars was a whaling vessel out of New Bedford, Mass. It was built at Newburyport, Mass., in 1823. Another log for part of this period is preserved in the archives of the New Bedford Whaling Museum; that states that this voyage (to the Indian Ocean) was mastered by Gerardus P. Harrison, and was from 10 June 1856-13 April 1860.
